What is Sponsorship? Will having a Recovery Partner benefit me? This page offers advice for these and more frequently asked questions.

In our group, we prefer the term Recovery Partner in place of Sponsor.

What does a Recovery Partner do? A Recovery Partner helps another alcoholic work through the steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, which is the core of the recovery program we are in. That is the only requirement. Anything else that evolves from the relationship is up to the individuals involved.

What makes a good Recovery Partner? This should be someone with who you can relate. If a particular individual speaks to you when they share, reach out to that person. If things aren’t working for you, a good Recovery Partner will understand if you seek other options. You should never feel pressured to stay in a recovery relationship.

How do I find a Recovery Partner? At the end of our meeting, the host asks everyone to switch to ‘gallery view’ and asks, “Will all those Members who have worked a program of recovery and are willing to be a Recovery Partner to others, please wave frantically at the screen.” The members waving have time and are willing to talk with you. See if it is a good fit! Seek out one of those people!

Finding a Partner can seem daunting, but try not to let it intimidate you. Don’t wait! Most people who have completed the program, (and have the time), would be happy to be your temporary sponsor and get you onto the road to recovery until you find a match.
